Some of you may have seen TLC’s new show, “Sister Wives”, which details the life and times of modern-day Utah polygamist Kody Brown, his 4 “wives”, and their 16 children. According to TIME NewsFeed, there is a police investigation underway regarding the illegal situation. In the United States, it is against the law to be legally married to more than one spouse.
While I think the police investigation is a good idea, just to make sure that nothing illegal is going on, quite frankly, I don’t think anything illegal is going on. Brown is “legally married to one woman, but counts the other three as 'sister wives', a term used in polygamist groups.” As long as he is married only to one woman, he’s not going against the law. The situation, while unorthodox and against my personal belief system, is, when you think about it, not uncommon. Essentially, Brown is married and has 3 “mistresses”, if you will. He also has several children by the different women. And they all happen to live in the same household.
But how many people are in the same situation, just not in the same household? How many husbands have a mistress? Or two? Or more?? How many of them have children with both their wives and their mistress? Does this make it right, or okay? No; people should be married to, or in a committed relationship, with only one person at a time. But like with anything other law, there are loopholes. And while it’s good to find out if any laws are being violated, it just seems like a waste of time in this case.
